The older I get, the more I realize that I am the boy who graduated from boarding school in June of 1988. Naive, simple, with tunnel vision. I can see what is right in front of me, but making plans for ahead of me or to the side of me is so incredibly difficult. The positive progress I have in my life I owe entirely to people who reminded me that I am intelligent, capable, and likeable. I still struggle with a darkness in my nature; it is the people who love me and lift me up who have given me my life.
When I first found myself living in Indianapolis, I made french fries at Steak N Shake. My girlfriend suggested that I apply to work Christmas at a department store. She suggested that I finish my college education. A buddy suggested that I contact a principal who was looking for another 4th grade teacher. He also suggested that we start our Masters degrees. It has been the people around me reminding me to look around me that have given me my life.
